Peavey Millenium BXP 4 String Bass Project
This was handed to us recently for a few minor tasks. The client asked for the guitar to be restrung and cleaned up, it had been left up on a wall for quite a while and the client wanted to start using the bass for live gigs. It also had a fault, a pick up was not working which needed investigating.
The corroded old strings were removed first, the machineheads and bridge have been cleaned up and refitted, followed by the body having a polish up to get some life back into the colour. The fretboard was the redressed and conditioned ready for some serious play!
The next task was to diagnose the electrical fault. At first we thought it was a faulty bridge pickup, but on removing the control plate we found the cause almost immediately! This bass has no individual pick up selection, it has individual volume pots, then a single tone pot to smooth out and blend the output from the two. the bridge volume pot hot wire had come away from its connection. This was an easy fix as it was just a case of dropping a little solder back into place, we also cleaned up the poles on the pickups and installed some black pickup covers at the clients request.
The set of bass strings selected by the client were then fitted, followed by fine tuning the intonation, making sure the neck was straight and the saddles in the bridge where settled right.
We are due to discuss with this guitars owner the possibility of installing a different value capacitor to adjust the tone, as well as looking at custom wiring options to make this guitar more versatile for the owners needs. This will help the peavey hold its own in a live gig environment!
